U periodu (1880-1929) u čileanskoj "Eri šalitre" radnička klasa živi u užasnim uslovima. Svi pokušaji da se stvori radnički sindikat ugušeni su u nasilju.
1925. godine rudarski grad Marusia u severnom Čileu je poprište događaja u kojem vlada uz pomoć vojske masakrira štrajkaše i celokupno stanovništvu u nastojanju da zaštiti interese stranih kompanija.
