Opis:
Tridesete godine u Njemačkoj, doba je Weimarske Republike. Čokoladni magnat i ruski emigrant Hermann Hermann (D. Bogarde) polako ali sigurno tone u ludilo. Kako Njemačka nije tako gostoljubiva kao prije, Hermann sanja o bijegu od svega. Počelo je s doživljajima napuštanja vlastitoga tijela kad vodi ljubav sa svojom ženom Lydiom (A. Ferréol), pri čemu on sjedi u stolcu i sve to promatra. Slijedili su ispadi s radnicima, poslovnim partnerima i neznancima...
Ton ovoga filma je ironičan kao što je u istoimenom romanu Vladimira Nabokova prema kojem je scenarij napisao poznati britanski dramatičar, rodom Čeh, Tom Stoppard. Na festivalu u Cannesu 1978. redatelj Rainer Werner Fassbinder nominiran je za Zlatu palmu. Iste je godine u Njemačkoj film dobio tri nagrade: za najboljeg redatelja, fotografiju i produkciju.
