    Filmovi rađeni po romanu Jadnici Viktora Huga toliko su često snimani da je ponekad teško razlikovati različite verzije. Jedna od najboljih i najvernijih adaptacija je upravo ova 240-minutna verzija francuske produkcije, u kojoj glavnu ulogu tumači Jean Gabin kao Jean Valjean. Kada ga uhapse za sitan zločin, Valjean provodi 20 godina u brutalnom Francuskom kaznemom sistemu. Čak i nakon puštanja na slobodu, nalazi se pod budnim okom nemilosrdnog inspektora Javaret-a.
