Opis:

U gradiću Desert Rock u američkoj državi Arizona sredinom 50-ih godina prošlog stoljeća, lokalni liječnik Matthew Hastings biva pozvan da pokuša rasvijetliti okolnosti smrti znanstvenika Erica Jacobsa. Kod Jacobsa je zabilježen iznimno rijedak slučaj akromegalije, poremećaja uzrokovanog viškom hormona rasta i porastom stvaranja proteina IGF-1, što je za posljedicu imalo nekontrolirani rast kostiju. Dok se pita kako se takva promjena mogla odigrati tijekom svega nekoliko dana, Matthew će upoznati Stephanie Clayton, znanstvenicu i novu asistenticu Jacobsova poslodavca, profesora Geralda Deemera.
Njih će dvoje ubrzo otkriti da Deemer pokušava iznaći formulu primjena koje bi omogućila rast životinja do divovskih razmjera. Deemer se u tome vodi plemenitim motivima, jer mu je želja najprije smanjiti a potom i posve ukloniti problem gladi u svijetu. Kad on uskoro kreira atomski izotop koji bi trebao omogućiti brz rast životinja, odluči ga primijeniti na sebi, te će Stephanie na njemu ubrzo uočiti simptome akromegalije.
